NY500 Cafe: Review

In recent years motorist cafes have become very popular destinations for classic car and motorcycle enthusiasts. A simple formula of good basic food (usually built around the full English), collections of automobilia, the chance to meet fellow enthusiasts and a destination for a drive out to make it the perfect weekend activity.

The NY500 cafe is located close to Malton in North Yorkshire and makes a great venue for a run out. We visited on a Friday so there were no events on, but it was still busy with bikers and local workers enjoying their lunch.

First impressions are positive with the good parking and attractive buildings. They even provide pads for motorcycles to ensure their bikes are stable. Orders are placed at a small counter with a choice of good traditional fayre including sandwiches, burgers and, of course, the full English. The plates were full and the customers were complimentary. Whilst their claim to make the best full English in the world cannot be verified, they make a good case.

In the cafe area there is a small collection of cars. Star of the show, at least for me, was a Metro 6R4 but it was keeping good company with an ex Steve Soper touring car. A substantial collection of Chopper bikes decorates the roof bringing back childhood memories. However, even more significant was a blue Yamaha FS1E which was also my first mode of transport at the age of 16, though mine was orange and not nearly in the same condition.

Whilst the cafe and museum experience was very pleasant, what makes the NY500 special is the location. The cafe is located next to a large field which can be used for car displays and special events and holds up to 2 000 cars. In fact it can be hired for free subject to the event meeting certain criteria. This makes it an ideal weekend destination as there is almost always a club meet, autojumble or special event.

Whilst you are at it you might want to continue your day out by visiting Malton, which claims to be Yorkshire food capital or Eden Camp modern history museum.

My view? If you are looking for a drive out then the NY500 should be on your itinerary. But check the website and time your visit with an event or autojumble. If you are an event organiser then it seems perfect for a club meet, special event or stopping off point on a run to the coast.
