Classic Escort with ‘lowest ever mileage’ goes up for sale

By Classic Yorkshire correspondent Tony Lofthouse

Back in the 70s my grandad tootled around Ilkley in his pristine evergreen Mark1 Escort 1100L, averaging about 2,000 miles a year. I thought, years later, how the car’s next owner would have been thrilled to pick up such a rare low mileage gem!

So I was amazed to hear about another ‘lightly run’ Ford Escort making headlines for clocking up the equivalent of just 84 miles per year!

The 1988 XR3i in question has covered 2,894 miles in 34 years and is revving up to go to auction next month with CCA Everyman Classics without a reserve.

The Escort is being sold by its only owner who bought the car on 1st August 1988, new plate day.

The mercury grey XR3i, powered by a 1.6 litre engine, was last driven in 2016 and has been in storage ever since. It comes with much of its original paperwork, including MOT certificates.

A spokesperson for the auction house, said: “We really have no idea what the car might achieve – £20,000 undoubtedly, £30,000 quite possibly or it could be lots more.”

We’ll find out on sale day (10 December) at Warwickshire Event Centre. To visit the auction site click www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/
