Race for Glory

It seems that there hasn’t been a good motorsport movie for years and now, all of a sudden there is a glut of them in production and hitting the theatres. Just after Christmas you can see Ferrari and a few weeks later a rally based epic titled Race for Glory (Audi vs Lancia).

For those who lived through the Group B era it has always seemed that the sport was never quite the same spectacle after the Group B ban. For high speed drama, manufacturers rivalry and strong personalities (including the Michelle Mouton who came withing a whisker of becoming world champion) it is a plot made for the movies.

There has been little about this movie until the trailer dropped and unsurprisingly looks great. However, the movie is described as inspired by events rather than a documentary. We can expect a number of changes of fact for the benefit of the script and artistic licence. A concern aggravated by the side by side racing scene in the trailer.

Knowing how the movie distribution network works I think it is unlikely that the run will be a long one so if you want to see it, get to an early screening.

The film will be in cinemas in January 2024 and depicts the rivalry between the two brands during the 1983 World Rally Championship.

The movie isn’t a documentary, but “an action-packed sports drama inspired by true events”. It highlights the rivalry between the Audi Quattro A1 and the Lancia 037, which had debuted a year earlier as the successor to the Stratos, retaining the rear-wheel-drive layout.

The movie stars Riccardo Scamarcio, Daniel Bruhl, Katie Clarkson-Hill and Volker Bruch. The latter plays the role of the Lancia driver Walter Rohrl, while Daniel Bruhl (played Niki Lauda in Rush) portrays Audi’s race director Roland Gumpert.
