A Mercedes-Benz dealership in Bradford is celebrating its 70th birthday this year.
The Bradford site – originally called Charles Sidney Motorcycles and dating back to 1916 – is the oldest distributor of Mercedes in the UK and became the models first supplier in the North of England.

The contract with Mercedes-Benz goes back to 1953 when Raymond Scatchard negotiated with the German makers and ran the business from a city centre showroom.
In 1963, the Charles Sidney business moved to its current site on Thornton Road and converted a textile mill site into a large workshop.
The new-look dealership was opened by Alfred Neubauer, the famous racing manager for the Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix team from 1926 to 1955.

Over the decades, the dealership has been a family business with Raymond’s son Malcolm joining the company in 1965 as a trainee technician. He stayed 34 years to head up the motor business.
Malcolm, who now runs his own classic car business, Gasoline Alley, said: “Charles Sidney was a business that flourished with the growth of the city and I am proud of the close family association with its success.
“My father was instrumental in negotiating with Mercedes in July 1953 to become the first UK importers and since then thousands and thousands of car sales have been made.”
It’s said that in 1964 the Bradford business had the highest volume of car sales in the UK and was the sales leader for Mercedes-Benz.

The family connection continues today with Malcolm’s brother’s son-in-law Darren working as a mechanic at the dealership.
In 2008, the site was taken over by Pendragon – one of the biggest motor retails in the UK – with sales under the management of the Stratstone brand.
Despite the changing times, today’s owners are very conscious of the wonderful local motoring heritage and held a big celebration at the Bradford showroom last weekend to mark its success over decades. Among the special guests was Malcolm Scatchard, who was joined by Yorkshire members of the Mercedes-Benz club and their classic cars.

For visitors to the showroom, there are two vintage cars not to be missed – a red 1958 190SL convertible and a 1984 reg 380SL.
